Viva Milano! The city’s Fashion Week kicks off today, and we’ve rounded up six not-to-be-missed happenings.
1. Since his Fall ’15 menswear debut at Gucci, Alessandro Michele has become the toast of the industry, his gloriously mishmashed collections among the most tenor-setting runway forces in recent memory. On the heels of Gucci’s Spring outing on Wednesday, Kering CEO François-Henri Pinault will raise a glass to Michele and his already eventful tenure at a dinner. With a guest list that’s sure to be one of the week’s most exclusive, it’s a bash that will bring a well-heeled few out to Corso Monforte.
2. Here’s to fresh starts. This season a crop of designers will be making debuts in Milan: Peter Dundas at Roberto Cavalli; Arthur Arbesser at Iceberg; and Massimo Giorgetti, who gave us a taste of his vision for Emilio Pucci with a Resort lookbook, will host his first runway show at the label come Thursday afternoon.
3. Meet another young gun taking the spotlight at MFW: Daizy Shely. The Israeli newcomer is the latest designer whom Giorgio Armani has taken under his proverbial wing, offering up the use of the Armani Teatro’s impressive space. Expect a fanciful, full-throttle vision of femininity.
4. What to wear while dashing from show to show? Street style favorite JJ Martin made the answer a snap with a new capsule of dresses in collaboration with Italian textile titan Montero, launching at a bash Thursday night at Potafiori. The breezy maxi T-shirt shape will take you from day to night, while eight kicky archival prints mean there’s something to suit every taste.
5. Making it to Milan and not taking in a little culture? It may as well be a cardinal sin, and while the Pope may be taking up his duties stateside this month, why risk it? Head to the Villa Reale di Monza for “Bellissima: Italy and High Fashion 1945-1968.” After making a splash at Zaha Hadid’s Maxxi museum earlier this year, the exhibition bows on Thursday with a whole new section devoted to textiles, curated by the likes of Stefano Tonchi and Maria Luisa Frisa.
6. Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli recently debuted their “Food for Thought” pop-up for Red Valentino on the Corso Como in collaboration with street artist Zap. Stop by Thursday night for a live performance, or any time through October 12 to shop the Zap capsule collection, which benefits a Milanese charity.
