On February 17, when Valentine’s Day was fresh in our minds and you could still find a solid bag of Reese’s hearts for 50 percent off stuck on the shelf at CVS, Lesley Arfin and Gillian Jacobs hosted a dinner celebrating the new Netflix series Love, starring Jacobs and cocreated by Arfin, her husband Paul Rust, and Judd Apatow. The cozy residency location of the restaurant Alma at The Standard hotel in Hollywood set the scene for the evening. Ari Taymor and Ashleigh Parsons reopened their beloved restaurant for a stint in the hotel after being forced to close their downtown location last fall, to many Angelenos’ dismay. Frankie Rayder, Kim Gordon, and Carrie Brownstein gathered in the dimly lit narrow dining room and piled into booths along with Ed Droste and Busy Philipps to dine on grilled swordfish and salads with crushed avocado and smoked almonds. Instead of the chocolate-covered strawberries and cavity-inducing conversation hearts you might normally equate with a series titled Love, dessert featured something a bit more obscure: parsley root, fernet, and ginger sundaes. And as for how Jacobs spent her Valentine’s Day? “I drove my mom to the airport!”
