It was a very long night at The BAFTA Awards, from the freezing red carpet outside the Royal Opera House to the ceremony, to dinner at Grosvenor House, to the after-parties. The fashion winners on the women’s side were numerous: Cate Blanchett in an ornate embroidered McQueen with a black feathered skirt; Alicia Vikander in a Louis Vuitton dress pieced together from black leather with metal links; Rooney Mara in pale beige leather and hexagonal cutout Givenchy couture; Saoirse Ronan in flower-beaded Burberry; Dree Hemingway in carnation-strewn floor-length Erdem; Dakota Johnson in a poppy red Christian Dior chiffon slip dress; and Julianne Moore in a slim white Armani Privé gown with black straps.
On the awards side, it was basically a landslide for The Revenant, which picked up best director, best film, and best actor, while Mad Max: Fury Road took four trophies for makeup and hair, costume design, production design, and editing.
Brie Larson was a no-show (she is filming in Australia) but won best actress for Room—perhaps another indication that she’ll go on to triumph at the Academy Awards. Kate Winslet won Best Supporting Actress for her role in Steve Jobs. Though Winslet praised what is “an extraordinary year for women,” at some points it felt as if what was supposed to be a breakthrough juncture for women working in film had dwindled to nothing much in terms of respect. When host Stephen Fry called Jenny Beavan, the winner of best costume designer for her work on Mad Max: Fury Road, “a bag lady,” he was heckled, booed, and hissed from all tiers of the auditorium.
Otherwise, the BAFTA had clearly made a concerted effort to show itself at its most inclusive of diversity, honoring Sir Sidney Poitier as a Fellow, and awarding John Boyega as its rising star for his part in Star Wars.
The funniest moments came in the warmup, when the BAFTA played a Kiss Cam joke for Valentine’s Day, zooming in on attendees. Loud cheers went up for Leonardo DiCaprio’s embrace with Dame Maggie Smith, and Rebel Wilson’s long snog with Eddie Izzard.
