Nadine Strittmatter

What comes to mind when you think of the classic Chanel woman? Is it a two-toned ballet flat? Maybe a quilted 2.55 bag? A neck strung with logo-emblazoned pearls? Yes to all of the above. But what do the people who punch in at couture-gilded 31 Rue Cambon wear on a daily basis? For the regular fit models at Chanel headquarters in Paris, it’s less tweed-woven skirt sets and more like an eternally cool “casual Friday” of T-shirts and jeans. Need proof? Take a glance at the Instagram accounts of Karl Lagerfeld’s trinity of cool girl favorites: Amanda Sanchez, Cris Herrmann, and Nadine Strittmatter, all of whom have a double-tap-inducing habit of posting their pared-back looks on the storied house’s mirror-lined, spiraling staircases. Their ensembles vary, ranging from roughed-up Converse with sheared-off pinstriped trousers to baggy jeans and punk tees, or simply an oversize men’s button-up shirt. Nary a full runway look in sight, despite the fact, of course, that they all fit them perfectly.

Sure, there are, of course, perks that come with working in-house for Chanel, including plenty of covetable duds to add to their getups. And the trio manages to artfully weave those classic Chanel pieces into their laid-back aesthetic for a polished dose of high-low insouciance that would make the woman who turned a Breton-striped marinière into a couture piece very pleased. Sanchez might throw one of those famed tweed blazers over a tee, while Herrmann will wear her high suede ballet-toe boots with high-waisted jeans or mix and match a Chanel Airlines shirt with a fringed jacket. Strittmatter might wear a skirt set, but only over a regular white tee. It’s everything but contrived—and always comes complete with a personal, natural touch. Mademoiselle Chanel would be proud.
