Maybe you remember them. I, for one, recall the excited whispers they inspired when they hit the runway, and plenty of cool girls still name-check them: the oversize, open-cable-knit sweaters seen atop liquid, bias-cut silk slip dresses that Protagonist showed a year ago. Designer and cofounder Kate Wendelborn has since departed the brand, but Fall finds her back in the game with a new project, her fledgling knitwear line, Wendelborn. After taking a sabbatical of sorts from the world of fashion, the designer was musing on ideas of freedom in both personal and professional life. The result is a lineup of knits meant for—as she puts it—“real girls.” Wendelborn’s creations at Protagonist were always marked by an unfussy elegance, but here it is laid even more bare, underscoring the art behind her casual wares.

“It’s about getting back to roots,” she told Vogue.com at a recent preview. Here are a host of styles for true everyday wear, deliciously un-precious in their ethos—though, make no mistake about it, they’re anything but average. Consider the gorgeous, vintage-inspired ski sweaters, all hand-knit in New York, which will top out the price range (at $1,400 to $1,600). They’ll come in one colorway apiece, in keeping with the tightly edited initial offering. In addition to the hand-knits, Wendelborn has also whipped up plush honeycomb- and cable-knits, as a reversible number with exposed seams. (Unveiling just a hint of process has long been a signature element of her designs.)

The proportions are impeccable: artfully dropped shoulders and extra-long sleeves that graze the tips of your fingers. In either 100 percent cashmere or an alpaca blend, they’re the kind of pieces you’d love to lose yourself in. The lineup’s surely not just sweaters, though: The label will also be offering the best T-shirts we’ve seen in ages, enzyme-washed to supple, drapey perfection and with a shape to suit every taste, from fitted to boyfriend (as well as a long-sleeve and a tank). In a micro-ribbed, slinky washed wool, the effect was downright Ali MacGraw. In short? Fashion’s only too lucky to have Wendelborn back at it.
