Fashion is as fast-paced a business as any, and Rachel Shechtman’s Chelsea boutique, Story, could scarcely be better suited to it. The 2,000-square-foot rotating concept shop changes its theme (past “stories” included themes like New York and Well Being) every four to eight weeks, bringing its shoppers glorious mishmashes of curated goods. For her latest takeover, Shechtman has tapped that maestro of Instagram illustrators, Donald Robertson, for a series of collaborative projects, ranging from the easily attainable (a kiss-print Diet Coke bottle exclusive to the store) to the loftier (@drawbertson Canada Goose topper or Rolex, anyone?). That premise alone is sure to draw fashion types seeking a reprieve amid the packed show schedule, but in a stroke of brilliance, Shechtman is upping the ante, bringing Robertson together with another of the business’s most fanciful figures: Iris Apfel.
In what she’s dubbed “collabapalooza” (Robertson, for his part, calls her the “merch yenta” for her matchmaking abilities with creative types), Shechtman has recruited Apfel to curate a selection of jewelry from her own closet to be sold at Story starting tomorrow. As Apfel tells Vogue.com, “I’ve been collecting these things since I was 11 years old, and I just had my 94th birthday, so do the math!” Culled from her extensive personal archive, pieces dating as far back as the ’50s will retail for anywhere from $30 to $995. When pressed to call out particularly beloved styles from the offering, Apfel demurs: “It’s like being asked who’s your favorite child!” While we’d wager that this batch of baubles will be snatched up quickly, expect new items to appear at random through September 27 when Robertson’s Story comes to a close. And for those to whom the mad dash of fashion month impedes recreational retail, not to worry—Shechtman tells us an even bigger selection of Apfel’s bijoux is forthcoming for the holidays.
