From classic to mock-neck, the turtleneck is a tried-and-true warm staple for colder climes. But like every sweater during the temperature drop, the piece runs the risk of becoming another lived-in and actively pilling throw-on. The best way to keep the piece from losing its glory? Bring the focus back to its namesake—the neck—by attaching a bit of luxury to those earlobes. Pairing earrings with a turtleneck adds a neck-lengthening effect and, depending on the knit and the bauble, often a stylish punch of contrast. The coupling added a jolt to the Fall 2015 runways at Céline, where a ribbed cream mock turtleneck was instantly elevated with a simple pair of dangling metal earrings, and at J.W.Anderson, where hefty, mismatched geometric jewelry added an extra dose of outré to a brashly striped turtleneck dress.
Off the runway, the turtleneck-and-earring duo remains a classic. Audrey Hepburn will likely always be remembered for her pearl screwbacks and plain black turtleneck, while Sade made the covered-collar-and-ear-adornment combination her uniform with a pair of larger-than-life hoops and a solid-hued turtleneck. And by the way, Sade proves to have one of the better takeaway styling tips: The singer’s slicked-back ponytail gave the whole look a clean, sleek finish. And what prettier way is there to rear your head this chilly season?
