The trending topic among my fashion friends isn’t Labor Day plans or even the mad, monthlong dash of Spring 2016, which presently looms so large. No, despite New York City’s 90-degree days, the one thing people can’t stop talking about is outerwear. Why? Well, beyond warding off the next cold snap—as unlikely as the prospect seems in this humidity—there’s a lot to be said for the inherently transformative qualities of a great topper. My own closet may be a sea of basics (black silk button-downs, white tees, jeans), but jackets and coats give them new context. On Monday I opted for a robe in blood red velvet that doubled as an homage to Teddy Boys of the fifties; today it’s a long denim duster, divisive among colleagues and earning the occasional misplaced comparison to Justin and Britney’s double-denim American Music Awards outfits of the early aughts.
