As Olivier Rousteing’s Balmain army has grown, he’s enlisted countless familiar faces to join its ranks—Gigi and Bella Hadid, Jourdan Dunn, and Kendall Jenner among them. Though the latest generation of modeling stars is both seriously buzzy and very social media–friendly, nothing competes with a supermodel moment. At today’s show, Doutzen Kroes, Lily Aldridge, Alessandra Ambrosio, and Isabeli Fontana all took a turn on the catwalk, but it was Caroline Ribeiro who opened the show and had the most heads turning. Ribeiro, a Brazilian star who dominated the catwalks in the late ’90s and early ’00s with her distinctive walk and modern, multiracial beauty, was a favorite of Tom Ford during his tenure at Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent and a near-constant presence on the catwalk at the beginning of the millennium.
Not just a runway favorite, Ribeiro was a regular in the pages of Vogue, where she was shot by photographers like Mario Testino, Raymond Meier, and her frequent collaborator Steven Meisel, who worked with her repeatedly for the American and international editions. Skilled in front of the camera, Ribeiro brought a levity to her work, often smiling, dancing, and countering fashion’s seriousness with an exuberant energy. With all eyes once again on Ribeiro, take a look back at her classic moments, and discover why this one-of-a-kind model still matters.
