New York City’s MoMA got the Wild West treatment Wednesday evening for the premiere of Jane Got a Gun, hosted by The Weinstein Company with the Cinema Society and Serpent’s Bite. The drama stars Academy Award–winning actress Natalie Portman, who plays Jane, a courageous woman who seeks the help of her ex-lover to protect her family against a dangerous outlaw and his gang. “The shoot was very challenging,” Portman admitted. “It paralleled Jane’s situation of being bombarded with so many challenges and having to find all the strength and buck up, when you just want to run away and hide.” Fitted in an embellished Valentino dress, Portman gracefully posed for photographers before making her way into the packed screening room, where she proudly presented the film alongside costars before taking her seat in the front row.

As to what is was like shooting on location in New Mexico, costar Joel Edgerton, in an Ermenegildo Zegna suit, simply proclaimed it was “excellent!” Edgerton plays Portman’s ex-fiancé in the film and jokingly added, “I play probably the most handsome cowboy that has ever ridden a horse.” He continued: “The making of this film wasn’t easy, and the great upside to that is when you go to work, you really see the excellence of the people around you.”

The celebration continued post-screening at The Skylark, where attendees were greeted with an array of hors d’oeuvres and champagne. Cast members mingled in a lounge that offered a beautiful setting and view of the city—far from the tumbleweeds of the Wild West.

Catch Natalie Portman in Jane Got a Gun in theaters on January 29.
