In Paris’s Hôtel Salomon de Rothschild, Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli presented their Spring 2016 Valentino Haute Couture collection. Combining Eastern and Western motifs, the ornate collection touched on house signatures, giving their couture clientele plenty to covet. Here, the 10 highs from the affair.
1. Marisa Berenson, Alba Rohrwacher, and Izabel Goulart were among the celebrities seated front row.
2. Before the show began, the maison shared a mood board with images of Loie Fuller, Martha Graham, and other famous dancers.
3. Backstage, models were instructed to find their inner goddess courtesy of a sign that read, “You are a priestess going to the temple at the top of the hill. You are fierce, serene, strong, and you have a purpose . . .”
4. Fortuny pleats came in droves, made of fabrics including taupe chiffons and marigold velvet; patchworking techniques were also referenced.
5. A Middle Eastern tree of life motif appeared at the sternum of many dresses, reinforcing the priestess vibes of the collection.
6. Many of the looks were topped off with custom serpent headpieces by Harumi Klossowska de Rola, daughter of the late artist Balthus.
7. Models walked barefoot along floors that were strewn with ranunculus, chain jewelry strung between their toes.
8. Body jewelry was worn over and under many of the gowns.
9. Guido Palau gave models tousled hair pulled half-up in mini chignons that sat just below their headpieces.
10. Pat McGrath crafted a radiant makeup look for the show that highlighted the models’ natural beauty.
