Thank God, Some of the Models at Couture Are Not Teenagers

Estelle Lefébure

Youth may be the predominant theme when it comes to model castings, but lately it would seem that there are still moments where experience trumps age. For his Spring 2016 couture show, designer Alexis Mabille treated his audience to a bona fide top model reunion, bringing back everyone from seven-time Vogue cover star and 1980s editorial mainstay Estelle Lefébure to ’90s catwalk queen Debra Shaw to strut down his catwalk. Estonian star Carmen Kass opened Mabille’s show, which was described by Mabille as a “tribute to timeless beauty” and which served as a treat for model aficionados eager to catch up with perennial favorites that included French model-turned-actress Audrey Marnay and Dutch stunner Rianne ten Haken.

Given that the average model age still hovers at around 17, Mabille’s celebration of beauty beyond adolescence was a welcome respite from the hordes of teenagers seen at every other couture show. At 49, Lefébure proves that age is nothing but a number when it comes time to work it on the catwalk. Her presence, along with that of Kass (37), Shaw (39), and Marnay (35), served to remind viewers that elegance is aided by maturity. Casting directors, take note.
