Of the current style-focused noughties resurgence, most examples are of the bubblegum pink and Amex-lacquered type, from velour Juicy Couture tracksuits in every shade of the rainbow to the logomania that turned up in collections from Louis Vuitton and Moschino. But not everything was so bright and brash during the cusp of the millennium. Miu Miu’s Spring 2000 runway featured a more pared-back look from the era, one that makes for a palette-cleansing cameo in any modern-day closet: a black turtleneck underneath a pale button-up shirt. It’s the type of look that has bona fide braniac appeal, unapologetically covered up and modest in a way that has been working for stylish Phoebe Philo–philes for years. (Plus, it’s winter—there’s no such thing as “too many” layers.)

To give the biblio-chic ensemble a go, take a page from the Vogue.com office. Market Editor Chelsea Zalopany favors a prim, octogenarian vibe, unironically citing the influence of her own grandmother. “My nana wears one all the time—summer, spring, fall, and winter. That woman is forever wearing a turtleneck and button-up look—with slacks,” says Zalopany, who prefers to wear hers under a denim button-front dress as a layering piece. Market Assistant Elizabeth Taufield considers the button-up a clean, polished complement that “takes the turtleneck an extra mile. And the collar gives the whole look a level of cool crispness.” Some quick tips to bookmark? Feel free to mix patterns via a horizontally striped turtleneck to go with a pinstriped button-up, or to play with proportion by keeping both pieces sleeveless. Whatever you choose, elevating your turtleneck is only a mere layer—and a few buttons—away.
