Kim Jones presented his Fall 2016 Louis Vuitton menswear collection at Paris men’s Fashion Week today. The affair, staged in the Serre Du Parc André Citroën in Paris’s 15th Arrondissement, drew a big celebrity turnout, but the real star of the event was Jones’s monochrome menswear. Here, the 10 talking points from the show while you wait for Alexander Fury’s review.
1. The runway space featured an iridescent hanging above the catwalk that undulated in the breeze, designed by Shinji Ohmaki.
2. Michael B. Jordan, Georgia May Jagger, Xavier Dolan, Lewis Hamilton, and Jing Bo Ran were some of the celebrities seated in Louis Vuitton’s front row.
3. Models emerged from an opening in the floor of the runway.
4. Most of the collection came in shades of black, gray, and ivory with accents of olive, navy, and beige.
5. At this point in the menswear season, it’s safe to say hats are having a moment. Vuitton’s were snug berets with branded patches on the front.
6. This season has seen its fare share of fur outerwear, but where else can you find a fur belt than Louis Vuitton?
7. Jones interpreted the brand’s historical association with travel via a silk pajama set with “volez voguez voyagez” (fly sail travel) written in script. That’s also the title of a current LV retrospective exhibition at the Grand Palais.
8. Black logo scarves were tied around the necks of many models, adorned with crystal LV pins and brooches, a jewelry collaboration created with Jones’s friend Jade Jagger, who was also front row at the show.
9. Prints appeared on the runway as linear faces, graphic Art Deco zigzags and cruciform shapes, and the Japanese wax and indigo painting technique roketsu, applied to denim and leather alike.
10. In addition to handheld trunks and oversize totes, Jones introduced a cylindrical cross-body bag in the house’s monochrome monogram material.
