Raf Simons cited Martin Margiela, a fellow Belgian, as an influence on his Fall 2016 menswear collection, shown yesterday in Paris. “Simons isn’t unique—nor even rare—in his admiration for the always-admired, often-imitated Margiela,” our reviewer Alexander Fury pointed out in his review. What is rare is how candid Simons was about the inspiration, and how clear the lines of influence are. Said Fury: “In its distressing, its conspicuous wear, XXL-scale sweaters and coats slipping and sliding off the figure,” it was so Margiela.
