Raf Simons presented his Fall 2016 men’s collection today at Paris Men’s Fashion Week. The collection included plenty of Simons hits—including new takes on youth culture, slim-cut suiting, and a twisted sense of proportion—as well as plenty for fanatics to obsess over, like oversize sweaters, graphic boots, and strong outerwear. Here, the 11 talking points from the show while you wait for Alexander Fury’s review.
1. No guest could complain about not getting a front row seat at Simons’s show today because there were none. The venue was separated by wood walls that guests stood around while models walked along black-taped paths.
2. Show notes with the title “Nightmares and Dreams” referenced Simons’s inspirations for the season, including Martin Margiela, Cindy Sherman, Twin Peaks, American youth, and The Breakfast Club.
3. The first look out was an oversize V-neck sweater with shredded edges and randomly placed felt lettering.
4. Simons’s much-loved plaids and checks returned this season as loose outerwear.
5. The cropped sweater silhouette Simons introduced in Spring 2016 returned as a distressed crewneck worn over a striped button-down.
6. The dominant silhouette of the show was über-long sleeves and shirts worn with slender trousers and calf-high boots.
7. Spring’s backpacks gave way to boxy doctor bags in retro graphics.
8. The oversize outerwear trend continues with Simons’s larger-than-life puffer jackets in jewel tones.
9. Many looks were topped off with short plaid scarves tied tightly around models’ necks.
10. Yes, there were plenty of varsity sweaters on the runway, though even some looks without a sweater featured nods to the style such as a sweater neck on a coat.
11. Center-parted hair for guys? It’s happening.
