While the sweater-vest may be synonymous with all things dorky, dweeby, and other words most often applied to Steve Urkel and uptight dads, it’s in the midst of a renaissance. From a serious 2015 catwalk turnout everywhere from Miu Miu Resort to Dior Pre-Fall, it then made the rounds on the Spring 2016 runways at Gucci and Prada. This time, the throwback staple was more geek-chic, hovering along cool-granny at Gucci where it was fuzzy, nubby, and Lurex-threaded, layered over diaphanous tops, while it received a dose of Dewey Decimal quirk at Prada, thrown on top of striped turtlenecks and pleated skirts for a charming dose of librarian flair.
But the runways are one thing, real life’s another: Is it possible to give the sweater-vest, a nerd-alert staple, a dash of punkish cool? Yes! Look to none other than Saint Laurent darling Grace Hartzel, who easily transforms the sweater-vest’s uptight reputation. The model topped her black, long-sleeve knit with a retro crocheted sweater-vest and a front-button denim mini A-line skirt. The game-changing styling trick? A pair of ripped black nylon tights. We told you she was a Saint Laurent girl.
