Think of the ultimate California girl and the image of Kate Hudson instantly springs to mind. With her beach blonde hair, tawny toned limbs, and easygoing vibe, she’s undoubtedly the definition of SoCal style. So when it came time for Michael Kors to dress the actress for the Golden Globes last night, the designer knew exactly the look he wanted to create. “Kate is such a California girl—super-glam but laid-back at the same time,” wrote Kors over email. “I wanted the gown to be streamlined yet extravagant and demure in color but provocative in cut. It shows off Kate’s sexy athletic figure at its best.”

The result was a glittering pale blush column gown with a bold cutout above the waist. From the front, the look was the perfect complement to Hudson’s bronzy glow, accentuating her toned abs and bare décolletage. From the back, the dress told a different story entirely: nearly all covered-up, with a modish choker built in for good measure. And yesterday’s big red carpet moment proved just the right opportunity to flaunt both sides of the dress—and her personality. The midriff-baring slash was also right in line with the trend for dresses spliced with subtle insinuations of skin we saw that evening—a cut above the rest in more ways than one.
