Fishing, drinks, dinner. Etcetera.” This is how Cecil Beaton, in a 1937 issue of Vogue, described the typical Palm Beach rounds of the smart set.
This jewel in the crown of Florida’s Gold Coast has long been a magnet for sun-loving snowbirds, and notables from the Kennedys to Serena Williams, who have chosen to call this seaside paradise “home.” Among its enticements are Worth Avenue, the “soft, warm climate, and the social side of the life; a life lived lazily on the broad hotel verandas, on the beach, and among the palms,” as the magazine put it in the December 31, 1903, issue. It’s no wonder that the Lilly Pulitzer dress, that happy-making, printed preppy staple, originated here.
