Trousers too long, but a trip to the tailor feeling impossible? Want to elevate those dingy bottom-drawer jeans? No problem: This was the year of DIY fashion trends, with plenty of ways to embroider, stitch, unstitch, cuff, and deconstruct any shirt, jean, or jacket you wanted. Here, see the trends that ruled the runways during 2015—and how to re-create them yourself for 2016 and beyond.

Bored of your white shirt? Wear it as a skirt—and more.

Want to spruce up that old white button-up shirt in your closet? Forget the iron. Lose the steamer. Instead, take a cue from the Spring 2016 runways where the classic banker boy white shirt was deconstructed into everything from a skirt at Altuzarra to an off-the-shoulder frock at Monse. Back in October we even put together this nifty guide to wearing the chic piece any which way, well into 2016.

Jeans too long? Opt for an extreme cuff.

If your pants are dragging on the floor, don’t fret. There is a quick and easy solution that takes less than 10 seconds, and doesn’t require a needle: the extreme cuff. A stylish way to alleviate too-long hems, the method allows for a cool, one-of-a-kind spin on your denim.

Put a patch on it.

Still on a roll from 2014, the patched and decorated denim trend hasn’t slowed down since. And for 2015, it took over the runway: The best way to get the one-off look yourself? Look no further than easy-to-apply patches. From raunchy to pro-feminism, wear your heart—and your patch—on your sleeve.

Find your groove with a twist of tie-dye.

If you loved the feel-good blots of the rainbow in hues of seafoam green on a frock at Altuzarra or in shades of navy on an oversize tunic at Rachel Comey for Spring 2016, you’re in luck. Tie-dye was a stellar way to tap into your flower-child side without going full-on granola. With plenty of kits available, you can try the process yourself at home in your backyard.

Take a deep breath and release:

The released hem, a staple within the street style circuit for its frayed, whiskered threads, has been the best way to elevate your denim with a simple tinkering trick. In other words, grab a stitch picker, an iron, and go to town.
