For the past week, a series of Instagrams featuring obsidian lacquered lips, holographic oil spills, and faces painted with smatterings of glittering metallics have filled the feeds of makeup artist Pat McGrath’s nearly 600,000 followers. The evocative images, accompanied by enigmatic hashtags #Phantom002 and #ComingSoon, created a curious hype—but those who watched the launch of McGrath’s debut beauty product, Gold 001, unfold on the social media app earlier this fall may have guessed at what was around the bend.
The answer was revealed last night at Brooklyn’s Kellogg’s Diner, where McGrath staged a takeover to transform the features of the city’s models, artists, and designers with four foil-finish velvety pigments in blue, copper, fuchsia, and an even more vibrant take on gold paired with a rimming of jet black pencil or a smear of ink-colored eye gloss.
It was a demonstration of just how far her second independent beauty venture for Pat McGrath Labs, officially known as Phantom 002, could take you. Packed in a dark, reflective sequined pouch with two blending brushes, the eight-piece kit is designed for releasing the rule-breaking club kid within. “[It’s] the spirit of imagination, mystery, darkness, and the lure of the unknown,” says McGrath, who cites the counterculture icons of her London youth (think Siouxsie Sioux, Boy George, and David Bowie) as her inspiration for the chromatic makeup. Only 1,200 kits will be available, and those looking to channel their own after-dark alter egos should stay tuned to patmcgrath.com—the countdown for Phantom 002 has officially begun.
