Trends that carry from the runway world to the real one are few and far between. Yes, small motifs and concepts can make their way into daily life—see: vintage-cut jeans à la Vetements and flat mule loafers like those at Gucci—but it’s rare that an idea arrives in pop culture verbatim off the runway. The chief example of a trend with the legs—er, arms—to make it in mass culture this season is the princess-cut sleeve.
Seen on the Spring 2016 runways of Gucci, Marc Jacobs, Simone Rocha, J.W.Anderson, Erdem, and more, the pouf-shoulder, slim-cut sleeve shape became one of the season’s breakaway trends. Within the fashion world, the idea had been percolating for some time prior, with Nicolas Ghesquière sending out a series of leg-of-mutton sleeves for Fall 2015 at Louis Vuitton and Raf Simons fleshing out his Fall 2015 Haute Couture collection at Dior with sheer, slightly voluminous styles.
Now the shape is making its play for the hearts of millions with an entire section of the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show dedicated to this Ren Faire silhouette. On tonight’s broadcast, you’ll find Kendall Jenner strutting out in a minty-blue corseted jacket with accentuated shoulders, Sanne Vloet sporting a pale pink and oh-so-proper leg-of-mutton style, and Vita Sidorkina trying out both oversize pouf sleeves and a medieval-styled ruff. The choice of such a stylized shape might seem like a far reach for Victoria’s Secret, but show me a girl who doesn’t dream of being a princess, even for a night.
